What Are the Top 8 Interior Design Trends in 2023?

Your kitchen, bathrooms, living room, and more will feel fresh, exciting, and welcoming with these 2023 design trends. Love what you see? Work with your designer to incorporate them into your home remodel

1. Jewel Tones

Jewel tones are the interior design color trend of 2023. Emerald green, sapphire blue, deep amethyst, and bold ruby are popping up everywhere, from wallpaper, sofas, bedding, rugs, and paint colors. Even Pantone’s 2023 color of the year is Viva Magenta–a vibrant and deep pink with blue undertones. Because these tones are earthbound by nature, they pair gorgeously with other earth tones on the neutral end of the spectrum.

Emerald pairs beautifully with natural wood tones, golden yellow tones, white, and light gray. Sapphire is an excellent match with medium to light grays with blue or pink undertones and is grounded by light beige. Pair Viva Magenta with white for a bold pop or any brown tone to bring out its warmth. Deep amethyst also pops with white but is stunning when paired with very soft earthy greens. Or, play up the coolness of amethyst with light cool gray.

2. Warm Earthy Tones

If earth tones are more your style, lean into the bold and warm earthy tones of 2023. Earth tones in greens and blues are still popular in 2023, but now there’s a big shift to their warmer cousins. Mauve, deep peach, terra cotta, ochre, rust, and saffron are stunning but subdued. They also all play well with natural wood in almost any shade, just as greens and blues have. With a bold earthy tone set next to wood, you’ll have a space that’s warm, inviting, and soothing.

These 2023 interior colors can be used as an allover wall color if you’re feeling bold. Your half bathroom is a great place to experiment with these colors on the wall. Or, choose a coordinating patterned wallpaper above wainscoting painted in one of these trending tones. In the kitchen, pair terra cotta on the wall with light cream-white cabinets and a chopping block on your island. Finish the space with gold hardware and light fixtures.

3. Japandi Style

Even if this term sounds new, the style elements certainly are not. Japandi is a combination of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian style and function. It’s a style that blends nature and simplicity, which has, in essence, been a major interior design trend for years. It’s beautifully simple, prioritizes function, and gives us the touch of nature we’re all craving in our homes.

The Japandi style is full of natural wood tones, subtle earth tones, intentional accents and forms, high-quality craftsmanship, and inviting shapes. The key is choosing furniture intentionally, focusing on natural wood, restrained use of color, and textures that are pleasing to the senses.

Keeping a space clutter-free is also in keeping with the popular Japandi 2023 trend. Work with your designer to incorporate pieces with built-in storage to have a place for everything to avoid drop zones and clutter. Forgo the notion of baskets and bins to keep your things organized. Instead, focus on properly-designed closets, add a mudroom for extra storage, and create built-in shelves and cabinets in the living room.

4. Luxe Maximalism

Plenty of homeowners are ready to do away with stark minimalism once and for all, but also don’t want a space that’s overwhelming and visually cluttered, either. Luxe maximalism is the art of balancing the two, for an outcome that’s full of personality but executed with intention and high design. Japandi is where minimalism meets nature; luxe maximalism is where luxury meets playfulness.

The 2023 design trends are all about injecting more personal style into your space. Luxe maximalism does this through quality pieces with interesting details that are layered for an end result that’s sumptuous and lush. When you’re working with your designer, be intentional about every piece, color, and texture that you’re including in your space to create an interior that’s balanced. Group like with like, choose furniture with coordinating shapes and lines but contrasting colors and patterns and incorporate texture and handmade elements, like carved wood and art.

5. Details, Details, Details

Details make a room more interesting. Crown molding, sconces, sculptural light fixtures, interesting tile patterns, statement ceilings, vintage finds, patterned wallpaper, and geometric elements all work to create a composed room that’s delightful and full of personality. This is why a tempting 2023 interior design trend is the Art Deco style. With rich jewel tones, geometric details, gold accents, and ornate decor, the Art Deco style feels new and exciting again.

Interesting details have a place in every room of your home. In the bathroom, choose a tile pattern that steals the show and balances it with smooth textures and a subtle color palette. In the kitchen, your hardware and light fixtures can carry a lot of personalities. Forgo the minimal styles and choose ornate designs. Indulge a little or a lot, but keep it balanced and cohesive.

6. Perfectly Imperfect

Many of the 2023 interior design trends are all about paying attention to texture. Imperfect textures, rather than hyper-uniform textures, are on the rise. They feel handmade, organic, and authentic. The key is to use imperfections intentionally. Too much in one space will feel sort of messy. However, by being calculated, imperfect textures and pieces can feel quaint and inviting.

Zellige tiles are a major part of this trend. They’ve been around for quite some time, originating in Morocco. Use these charming tiles in the shower, on your kitchen backsplash, around the fireplace, or on a statement wall in your primary bathroom. Soft green Zellige tiles are a beautiful choice for your shower walls and offer a subtle texture and variation in color that’s perfect for this space. Reclaimed tile and hand-painted tile will also give your spaces this same perfectly imperfect effect.

Vintage pieces are also great for the perfectly imperfect trend. We’re not going for chipped, cracked, or stained pieces here. Instead, a slightly-worn surface gives a lived-in look that gives a space a sense of authenticity.

7. Seating for Socializing

Say goodbye to a living room filled with stiff seating. In 2023, we’re leaning into our desire for more at-home entertaining by incorporating furniture that is stylish but inviting and comfortable. After all, comfort doesn’t have to look frumpy, it can come by way of high-end luxury, too. Curved sofas, well-designed sectional sofas, and inviting side chairs will have your family and guests wanting to sit and stay a while. To ensure your furniture choices don’t completely fill a room to achieve this goal, work with an interior designer to choose pieces that are visually inviting and comfortable without being bulky and overstuffed.

8. The Elevated Home Office

Although the home office is thought of as a utilitarian space, it doesn’t have to look like it. As more homeowners have taken up working from home, even if it’s part-time, we want to love the space where we’re spending hours of our day. To create a home office with an elevated style, create a wall of built-ins so you can skip over the bulky desk. Your office needs to be well-lit, so incorporate more natural light with additional windows. Task lighting is great, but don’t forget about including a statement fixture for style.

Office chairs have also come a long way in the past few years, so there’s no reason to compromise on style there, either. To keep the room from looking stark, add personal items like plants, the pottery collection you picked up in Mexico, and a pair of vintage chairs against the wall. As for your paint color, you want to choose a color that’s lively but not distracting. The 2023 warm earth tones are perfect for the task.
